DIY Ceiling Mobile

Before my 3-year-old was born, I decorated his room in a Vintage Toy theme. The colors were based on a primary color palette — his bedding was a beautiful plaid madras pattern from, you guessed it, Pottery Barn Kids.

I scattered vintage toy planes, trains and cars on the shelves and dressers… I bought old children’s books at thrift stores, I even put my very own teddy bear (circa 1980) on a high shelf.

I wanted something different than the typical attached-to-the-crib mobile and while I drooled over the various different ceiling mobiles that Pottery Barn Kids had to offer, they had nothing that fit the decor of the room. That’s when I found the Postcard Mobile.

I bought some Vintage Alphabet Flash Cards at Land Of Nod and finally, I had my perfect mobile!

But it doesn’t end there.
Once we moved boy #2 out of the nursery and into his Big Boy Room, I immediately went to work on boy #3′s decor.

I left the wall color the same (to save time and cost), ordered the bedding on Etsy, had a tree painted in the corner and found the perfect addition to the room… 4 little wool felted birds to hang from the mobile.

I adore this mobile. I think it adds the perfect touch to any room, any decor. And the best part about it? You can customize and change it as your decor or style changes (or as you change your child’s room over the years).

You can even go a step further and use it as a fun way to learn. Simply add numbers or letters (you can easily make your own out of colored Card Stock paper to save on costs).

… Or by adding black and white Animal Art Cards to help stimulate a little baby’s developing eyesight.

The one thing you have to remember is all four items must weight the same in order for the mobile to hang properly. (I had to add a small weight to one of the birds).

What would you do with one of these mobiles?
