Review: BabyBjorn Miracle Carrier

What we thought of the BabyBjorn Miracle Carrier

I tried out the miracle carrier with a 2-week-old baby, a 6-month-old baby and my toddler son who is 22-months-old and 23 pounds. Having used a BabyBjorn Original and BabyBjorn Air carrier with all my children — for the past 9 years — I will say that the Miracle Carrier is pretty perfect… for a younger baby.

Newborn tester

My newborn tester was soothed to sleep the second he was placed in the Miracle Carrier. He already loves being held in the upright position and the carrier cradled his little body so that he wouldn’t startle himself awake. I noticed that the armholes of the carrier (the part that touch his upper arm) have been changed over the years and now it helps babies feel more secure — rather than leaving their arms dangling. I easily, and quickly, adjusted the lumbar support to a comfortable position — even while he was secured in the carrier! He felt as light as a feather and I instantly noticed that he felt higher up on my body than I have been used with previous/other BabyBjorn carriers.

Infant tester

My 6-month-old infant tester was all about facing out — she already has complete head and neck control so we went with it. Actually, I don’t know of any baby that doesn’t enjoy looking out at the world from a higher vantage point so, just as I expected, she was as happy as a clam. Shortly after walking around (while she was kicking her feet with extreme joy) I had to adjust the straps tighter and the lumbar support to a lower position on my back but once I found the perfect spot, we were both happy and ready to continue exploring.

Toddler tester

This is my only qualm about the Miracle carrier. While my son fits the weight and height requirements, he is past the 15-month recommendation. I knew it was safe for him to be in the carrier (because he is well within the weight and height limits) so we gave it a try. Just like the infant tester, he wanted to face out so I obliged. It took me quite a while to get the adjustments just right so that his weight was evenly distributed on my body. We did eventually get it to a comfortable spot and I was able to carry him around for quite a while. I also tried placing him in the facing in position but that made him feel like I was carrying a sack of potatoes and he wasn’t having it.

After wearing it for a few weeks, I was able to get the hang of where I needed the waist belt and lumbar support placement to be and eventually I got the hang of it. I found that, on me, I needed the waist belt to be lower on my hips so that the lumbar support pieces could be as low as possible — supporting and distributing most of the weight on my lower back.

I will say that the seat of the carrier is very nice. Most carriers that are hybrid like this (ones that face in and out) require an additional piece to make the seat wider. There’s something about the way the seat on the Miracle Carrier is designed that allows even my toddler to sit comfortably facing in and out.

Bottom line, I believe the 15-month recommendation is there for a reason — even if your older child fits the weight and height requirements. I do wish the BabyBjorn Miracle carrier accommodated older babies more comfortably so it could last parents through the toddler years. BabyBjorn says that most toddlers — around the age of 15 months — prefer to explore the world by foot and while I tend to agree, there are times that both my son and/or I prefer to use a carrier.
